Simplifying the Engage NY/Eureka Math Curriculum

The EngageNY/Eureka Math curriculum is built around six key components, each thoughtfully designed to support deep mathematical understanding. In this post, I’ll walk you through each part of the lesson structure and explain how you can make each piece more engaging and accessible for students.

Fluency Practice: Building Number Sense

This portion of the lesson helps students strengthen their number sense and build confidence with basic facts. It also serves as a warm-up that prepares them for the day’s lesson.

Common activities include:

  • Flashcards with dot patterns
  • Quick addition and subtraction facts
  • “Make ten” strategies
  • Skip counting or number bonds

Application Problem: Real-World Math Connections

Next, students tackle an Application Problem—a real-world word problem that encourages them to apply prior learning in a new context.

What I love most about this part of the lesson is that it naturally promotes student discussion and strategy sharing. Whether they draw a picture, use tallies, or apply a known math fact, students learn there are many ways to solve a problem.

Pro Tip: I include a simple visual checklist in my resources so students can mark how they solved the problem (e.g., picture, tens fact, number line, etc.).

Concept Development: The Heart of the Lesson

This is the meat of the lesson—where direct instruction happens and students are introduced to the day’s key concept through modeling and guided practice.

This section is structured to:

  • Build on prior knowledge
  • Model new strategies or tools (like number bonds or tape diagrams)
  • Provide guided and independent examples

My Simplified resource includes a step-by-step teaching guide with built-in practice problems to make instruction manageable and focused.

Independent Practice: Time to Apply Learning

After instruction, students move on to Independent Practice, where they apply what they’ve learned.

To make this section more engaging, I’ve designed interactive notebook pages that align with each lesson’s objective. These not only provide extra practice but also serve as mini anchor charts students can revisit later.


Lesson-Aligned Games: Practice Made Fun

While EngageNY includes exit tickets, I’ve swapped those out for something I’ve found even more impactful—math games that align with each lesson’s content!

These games are perfect for:

  • Math centers
  • Early finishers
  • Partner practice
  • Weekly review

Each game targets the same objective as the day’s lesson while adding a layer of fun and engagement!


Homework: Reinforcing Learning at Home

To keep parents in the loop and give students additional practice, I’ve created a homework page for every lesson. These are short, focused, and mirror what was taught during the day—so they’re manageable and meaningful.
