Everything you need to teach 1.NBT.1

If your students are struggling with numbers past 20… you’re not alone.

So….WHAT IS 1.NBT.1

1.NBT.1 is all about helping students:

*Count to 120

* Start at any number (not just 1!)

*Read and write numbers

*Understand the pattern of numbers

This is where students begin to build real number sense—not just memorizing.

SKILLS TEACHERS OFTEN MISS

1. Counting from ANY number & crossing over tens

Students need practice starting at numbers like:

  • 37 → 38 → 39
  • 82 → 83 → 84
  • 99 → 100→ 101

**Not just 1, 2, 3…

A really fun way to practice this is to play **SPARKLE!**

Students stand in a circle. The teacher decides on the counting pattern- example: 12 to 18. Students count starting at the first number (12) and each student in the circle says the next number in the sequence until they get to the ending number (18). After the final number is said, the next student says SPARKLE and then the student after that sits down. Continue with this pattern or a new pattern until only one student is still standing. If a student messes up the count, they also sit down.

ROLL AND COUNT: DICE GAME

Another fun game is to roll two die to create a 2 digit number. For example if you roll a 3 and a 6 you could start at 36 or 63. Decide if you will be counting up or down from that number. Students count out loud until the teacher says stop. Then roll again and continue the game.

Students can also practice this game independently with a center activity or worksheet like the example below. They spin a starting number and then write the counting sequence when counting by 1’s.

2. Understanding the hundreds and 120 charts

Understanding the patterns of numbers will help students with counting and place value.]

A fun game to play is “What’s under the picture”. Give students a 100 or 120 chart and cover up a few of the numbers. Students will use their understanding of numbers and patterns to tell you what the number is. You can do this as a whole group activity, play with a partner or even an individual station like seen below.

3. know the missing number in a set/ before and after numbers

Numbers that come one before and one after a specific number. This will help students with number recognition and number patterns.

Students should know the missing number in a sequence of numbers. The numbers should be able to start at any number (not just 0 or 1) and could be a sequence counting forward or backward.

4. HOW to write a number and what it represents

Writing numbers is a key skill that is often missed in this standard! Students should be able to write numbers and understand what those numbers represent. This is key to building place value!!
